Educational Visits for Schools
Kilmainham Gaol Museum takes part in the OPW’s Free Educational Visits for Schools Scheme. Recognised primary and post-primary schools can visit free of charge during term time, subject to availability.
How to book
- Requests must be made in advance by email to [email protected]. Bookings cannot be made over the phone or on the day.
- Include your school name and roll number, the preferred date and time, the number of students and the number of accompanying adults.
- Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Because demand is very high, we recommend applying as early as possible in the school year.
- You will receive written confirmation of your booking. Please notify us promptly if your plans change so the slot can be offered to another school.
On the day
- The maximum number per tour is 35, including 2 supervising teachers or adults. Larger groups will be split across separate tour times where availability allows.
- Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour begins so the group can be checked in together.
- Teachers and accompanying adults remain responsible for supervision throughout the visit.
- The Gaol is a historic building and is very cold in the winter months — students should dress warmly. Buggies, wheelie bags and large items of luggage are not permitted on the tour.
Before you come
Document packs and worksheets for primary and secondary level are available to download from our education page, and can be used to prepare students beforehand or to follow up in the classroom afterwards.
